Latin American Women in Technology 2017 — Peru, August 24–25, 2017
As you may know, some years ago, I was at the Grace Hopper Celebration (GHC) 2013 attending the Latinas in Computing (LIC) lunch sharing a table with Jocelyn Simmonds. Our hosts opened the discussion for initiatives, and we “pitched” the idea of a Latin American conference, where people from the region can access to the GHC’s experience. We were inspired by the Grace Hopper Celebration — India and the Caribbean Celebration for Women in Computing.
Even being very ambitious, we never imagined the impact of bringing this to Latin America, advised and supported by LIC’s leadership. After the day of the pitch, we continued with meetings both virtual and in person with collaborators from all over Latin America, that generously donated their time to make this happen, as well as our sponsors.
The team delivered the first version of the conference along with Jornadas Chilenas de Computacion in 2015. We received coverage from media, including the Computer Research Association, for which we wrote an article to highlight the importance of these events.
For 2017, our aim is to generate even more impact. We had Luza Jaramillo joining the advisory committee during the preparations for the 2015 Conference, and helped us to set up the call for the organization of 2017 (Arequipa, Peru), and 2018 (Bogota, Colombia).
We have a great speaker lineup and growing with the collaboration of students, academics, and professionals that sent their presentation proposals; as well as supporting organizations and sponsors — please follow our postings on the social networks for updates!
